What teardown reveals
The decision starts with condition. Block and cylinder head integrity, crankshaft and bearing condition, cylinder wall condition and whether debris traveled through the oiling system all shape what is possible.
Some failures are contained. Others distribute metal throughout the engine, which changes both scope and outcome.
The factors beyond the engine
How long you intend to keep the vehicle, its overall condition, and whether it is a work truck that has to be back in service quickly all legitimately affect the right answer.
A vehicle with a solid body, good transmission and years of remaining use justifies a different decision than one with several other pending repairs.
What you should be shown
You should see what was found, understand why each option is on the table, and get the differences explained in plain terms before authorizing work. Any shop should be able to do that.
